After five years of using and abusing it on my workshop, I finally burnt up my faithful 12-Volt cordless drill I had at my toolbox and now in the market for a better and more power replacement. My eyes on 18-Volt cordless drill and stay away from 24-Volt or even 36-Volt. Those power hungry tool is more suitable for construction contractor working on the field and need more power. Most of the time I’m working on my own workshop for DIY projects or any Home Improvement projects. It is easy to get tired of using the larger 24-Volt or 36-Volt drills for the smaller projects, hence compact 18-Volt cordless drill is suitable for me. I also avoid NiCad battery since this type of battery is old technology and in fact contribute to damaging our environment if not properly recycled. I prefer the newer NiMH or even Lithium-Ion battery. So, in summary I want 18-Volt compact NiMH or Lithium-Ion cordless drill for my own.

Of course, my first option is going to DeWALT DCD760KL that I recommend to my best friend. The research was done to help my friend decided on his best cordless drill within his requirements, preferences and his budget. Mine is different even though I’ll be using my research as a basis to conduct more research for my own best cordless drill.

First, I prefer more torque over speed. DeWALT does not specify torque on DCD760KL, while other manufacturers put torque number on the technical specifications. I found Bosch 36618-02 produce 500 in./lbs torque, the highest torque compare with other brands, hence I started my research on Bosch 36618-02 18-Volt 1/2-Inch Compact-Tough Litheon Cordless Drill.

Weighing in just 3.7 lbs with a compact size at 8 inches long, this cordless drill is the first choice when come to work on tight space. It’s lighter compare with DeWALT DCD760KL and a bit shorter as well.

State of Art Lithium-Ion is Better than Ni-MH

This is one of the main reasons for choosing this Bosch 36618-02 cordless drill above others. Bosch 36618-02 utilizes state-of-art Lithium-Ion battery technology and Bosch’s proprietary ECP (Electronic Cell Protection) system to provide maximum cycle life, minimum self-discharge, and no memory-effect. Best of all, Litheon batteries will fully charged in 30 minutes and will be at 85% capacity in just 15 minutes. Hence you’ll have minimal downtime, even zero if you use the spare.

Like all cordless tools in Bosch’s 18-Volt product line, this Bosch 36618-02 drill/driver can be used with either a 1.3-Ah BAT609 Slim Pack battery (two included) or a 2.6-Ah BAT318 Fat Pack. If you’re looking for a lighter-weight option, the Slim Pack is the perfect choice. If longer runtime is what you need, the Fat Pack will do the job. Bosch is the only power tool manufacturer that provides this option. With this option, I can opted to buy drill configured with Slim Pack battery now, and later on buy additional Fat Pack battery, if need longer runtime.

What Other Users Says about their Bosch 36618-02?

Bosch 36618-02 is a great drill! I am Contractor and currently own the 36v Bosch litheon drill (Dewalt XRP before that), but I got tired of using it for smaller projects like hanging doors and installing cabinets due to it’s bulky size and weight. I now find myself using this drill for everything. It has an excellent power to weight ratio and is very smooth/refined. I have the slim pack batteries and they hold a good charge. I will still keep the 36V around but it may end up collecting dust. I have only owned the 18v for two weeks now so I can’t comment on it’s long term reliability, but I have used it for sinking numerous 3″ deckmates into framing lumber, speedbores, small holesaws, backerboard screws, and other fasteners. I can’t comment on it’s mixing ability (mortar and other cement mixtures), but that’s what electric corded drills are for. As an every day user, I am very happy with this purchase.

I’ve been using Bosch 36618-02 consistently for a wide variety of projects around the house. This drill has more than plenty of torque and the batteries seem to last forever. I’ve yet to have a single instance where I picked it up and it didn’t work due to a dead battery. Even the battery I haven’t been using is still at nearly full charge even though it hasn’t been getting used(as far as I can tell, anyway). This tool also has a shutoff switch built into the direction control so you can leave the battery on the tool indefinitely. The included LED light on the front of the tool is also very nice for working in darker areas, such as an attic.

I would definitely recommend this product.

Bosch 36618-02 is a Super Tool! I usually don’t brand-buy, but my garage seems to be collecting a lot of blue-green and red tools. I have a Bosch RO sander and jigsaw now, and I think they are both top notch. This cordless drill fits right in with the other quality tools. Background: I use this tool for light to heavy work (fine woodworking, drywall, rough carpentry, make holes in 4×4 joists with spade bits to run electrical cable).

The drill is very slender compared to my old (got it three years ago) cordless Craftsman. I can drill in tighter spaces now without having to use my 90 degree attachment. The size reduction also means a lighter tool, which is very deceptive; this drill has some serious power. Nothing like a corded drill but still… The power of the 18 volt is impressive to say the least. I love the 30-minute charge time for the baterries. I fully anticipate solely using this drill thoughout an entire day-long project.

The ratcheting lock it GREAT! I put in a bit and tighten it down with a ratchet lock. This feature has given me the utmost confidence that a bit will never again slip again.

I would encourage you to visit Amazon and read the customer reviews so you can make an informed decision before your purchase of Bosch 36618-02.

This is one of the best purchases I’ve made for last 5 years on purchasing cordless drill for various construction projects.

The batteries hold up great, charge in pretty short time, and have its full power all the way until the battery needs to be replaced. It’s great to have two batteries so that one is charging while the other is in use so you just have a quick break while changing batteries. You’ll appreciate the second battery of you’re working in construction projects where meet the schedule is everything in this game.

Recommended for you searching for perfect drill for various project.

    Hi there,

I’m a satisfied Bosch power user for a long time, especially this Bosch 36618-02 model. Seems all capabilities and features are top notch. The only complaint I have is the timing of LED turn on is not perfect. It should turn on just before the drill start, so I can position the drill at the right point.

But please don’t discourage just by minor feature not perfect. Once you get your hand on this Bosch 36618-02, you’ll be satisfied.

Thanks Danny for pointing out about the LED that turn on at the same time the drill started. To light up your drill point before drilling, just slightly press the button but don’t place the bit on your working material. Hence, you can see it before drilling.

I agree with you that this minor is not show stopper for Bosch 36618-02 to take action :)
